Vintage Design
In 1953, Martin Visser, as head of Spectrum’s design department, asked artist Constant Nieuwenhuys (Constant) to design a number of pieces of furniture for the company. The resulting design of the IJhorst tables were a forerunner to Nieuwenhuys’s later large-scale New Babylon architectural project. Constant was able to apply his new abstract visual language in practice as a series of architectonic furniture. The base of the table is formed by an elegant construction of thin wire steel typical of the 50s zeitgeist. The top is a multilayered birch plywood cut with an angled edge that adds to its feeling of lightness and the designers intention of having it float above the base,
A rare table – this is the middle size of the three sizes manufactured
